From a parade to fireworks from the No. 1 fireworks company in the world, this year's Fourth of July celebration will have something for everybody.

The Champaign County Freedom Committee, a not-for-profit volunteer group that organizes the main events, will start the day off with their Youth Run and 5K Race-Walk.

The Eastern pond, located next to Lantz Arena, might be getting deeper. David Crockett, manager or facilities planning and management, is considering a new project to increase irrigation efficiency. Since the pond is only five to six feet deep, algae form easily in the pond.

Local restaurants will donate proceeds Thursday to a Ball State University family. William David Carter, the son of Mark Carter, died at the age of 26 this week and the restaurants are looking to give back.

Mark Carter, also known as The Hot Dog Man, sets up his hot dog stand in The Village late nights at the corner of Dill Street and University Avenue.

Development firm purchases high-tech Research Park building

Fox-Atkins Development finalized the purchase of Research Park's former Motorola building from Motorola Inc. June 23. The 74,000-square-foot structure is the only building in the park not built by Fox-Atkins or the University of Illinois.

The former Motorola building, located between Oak Street and First Street across from the University's Assembly Hall, was put on the market during the fall of 2007 and about 215 workers lost their jobs.

Residence Life deals with mail backup

Earlier this summer, Mike Hurd was expecting a new debit card from his parents that has yet to arrive because of alleged mail backups for on-campus students.

"It's frustrating," the Orion sophomore said.

After the spring semester ends, mail delivered to the residence halls must be processed for former residents.

A Beardstown man was pronounced dead on the scene 8:50 PM last Saturday at the Macomb Raceway when he was trapped inside his burning car.

According to authorities, Kevin Lyles, 35 of Beardstown was racing a passenger car that he converted into a race car when he hit a tractor tire causing his vehicle to overturn and burst into flames.

QUINCY (AP) - As floodwaters slowly recede in some Illinois counties along the Mississippi River, they can't move fast enough for officials keeping a weary eye on damaged crops and strained levees.

No homes or businesses had been lost by Tuesday along the 54-mile Sny levee south of Quincy, but seepage damaged already-planted crops and has kept farmers from planting more, officials said.

Qualls, a Ball State University police officer, hasn't taken the bracelet off all year - throughout the 30 weeks of police training - and won't for the rest of his time as an officer.

Many students attending Eastern in the summer decide to start their July 4 activities early. With the holiday falling on a Friday this year, the university expects that most students will be leaving campus for fireworks and festivities.

Dining services in the residence halls and most of the University Food Court venues will be closed for the week of July 4, according to Mark Hudson.

Located in downtown Champaign, it could be mistaken for an old apartment building if not for the oversized marquee.
