Man says intruders took baseball card collection

An elderly Evanston man was robbed after falling for a scam Saturday.

The 87-year-old resident of the 1200 block of Dewey Ave. answered his door at 12:50 p.m. to a man dressed in an orange construction vest, police said.

According to police, the man said he was from the water company and that he needed to see something in the resident's basement.

The victim then followed the man downstairs.

While in the basement, the "worker" began talking on his cell phone and the resident started to hear noises from the first floor.

The victim then became suspicious and told the intruder he was going to call the police.

The man quickly left and was followed by the resident, who saw things scattered about the floor and cabinets and doors open.

He also saw the suspect and several others drive off in a dark station wagon.

After looking through the house, the man believed the intruders stole only a collection of baseball cards.

The matter is currently under investigation.

According to Cmdr. James Elliot, the setup is part of an occasional scam used on homeowners.

"Always ask for ID from anyone who comes from a public service company," he said. "Contact the company to verify someone should be in your house."
