Cheap Medill graduation is unacceptable for NU

I have loved spending the past four years of my life as a student at the Medill School of Journalism. The experience has been amazing, and I think that to this point it has been worth every dollar that my family and I spent in tuition money. However, I'd like to end my college experience on a positive note, and I don't think Medill is putting enough of my tuition dollars into creating a nice graduation ceremony.

To start, each senior is only given three tickets for their family members to attend the convocation because the auditorium we are using is not big enough. Should I really have to tell my grandparents that they can't see me graduate from college, let alone the top journalism school in the country? I know that Medill is one of the smaller schools at NU, but that doesn't mean we have fewer parents that want to see us graduate.

In addition, Medill seniors recently received an e-mail asking for volunteers to sing the The Star-Spangled Banner or the Northwestern Alma Mater at our ceremony. Would it be too much to ask to hire some professionals, or at least acquire the services of one of our classmates from the School of Music? Might as well just e-mail us our diplomas to save money on paper.

If this kind of thing bothers you, just wait until you start your journalism career. (Unless, of course, you're one of the elitists who's simply getting a journalism degree and then moving on to the $500-a-plate dinner crowd. (Continued…)

Two words: Whiny brat.

Also, ditto on the since when... Medill is lucky if it's in the Top 10; it's the top only in its own mind.

If you made the mistake of getting your degree in journalism, stop whining and get used to cheapness. It's part of the industry's business model these days. (Continued…)

I think the point is that the school collects a good buck for tuition, then does a low-budget graduation. If there aren't enough seats for everyone in the auditorium hold it someplace where there are. (Continued…)

Since when does a graduation ceremony "make" four years of education? It's not the ceremony; it's what you do with your knowledge that matters. Sorry to say, the real world isn't so nice as the safe cocoon you've been living in. (Continued…)

Medill F for you, Frank. If you had done the research -- or any research, for that matter -- you might have learned that Medill indeed does hire a group to play music at graduation. (Continued…)

Heidi Zhou sang a kickass National Anthem last year at the grad ceremony. I remember that because I know her! What's wrong with having a student sing the anthem?

I agree we should get more tickets. (Continued…)

I graduated last year from Medill and thought the graduation ceremony was good. I didn't mind Heidi singing the hymn.

Three tickets is more than enough. (Continued…)

*eyes her EIGHT tickets to SESP graduation*

Have you tried asking nicely? Just my *immediate* family is huge and needed eight tickets, so I requested extras from the grad coordinator. (Continued…)
