Mid-terms crept up too fast and they are dragging on longer than they should. If you’re pulling an all-nighter, stay awake — and classy — with espresso: Just two shots deliver the caffeine of a whole cup of coffee. Connoisseurs complain American java joints seldom match the bittersweet perfection in Europe, since the drink separates and spoils within 20 seconds of leaving the machine. But whether you’re waking up or staying up, pound high-quality caffeine at Evanston’s cozy cafés.

Kafein. 1621 Chicago Ave, $2.15
Kafein’s baristas know their espresso: For starters, they’ll serve it speedily enough to preserve the flavor. Characteristic of a well-made shot, you’ll get a hint of caramelized sugar complemented by rich, dark undertones. More of a latte type? Swirled into steamed milk, these shots pack just enough sweetness to keep you from scrambling for sugar.

Café Ambrosia. 1620 Orrington Ave, $1.98
A Café Ambrosia employee, a self-proclaimed “coffee snob,” rushed a shot over so it wouldn’t turn, and stressed the wonders of the in-house espresso machine. The cup was definitely potent – maybe a bit too strong and bitter to sip solo. Opt for a latte if you’re getting your fix here.

Unicorn Café. 1723 Sherman Ave, $1.76
At Unicorn Café, the beloved indie drip spot, you’ll get a mellower espresso that’s not nearly as bold, so if it’s the traditional you’re after, you’re better off going elsewhere for that Americano. The shot provides enough of a jolt to jump-start that cram session, but you’ll probably crave an extra hit of sugar to sweeten the deal.
